USB power and hubs for PathCam – best practices
Stable camera links depend on power budget and port topology. This post explains what to buy, how to cable it, and where issues show up. Guidance text only; add screenshots later where noted.
Recommendations
- Prefer desktop rear I/O ports for the camera connection.
- If distance or port scarcity requires a hub, use a powered hub with an external supply 5 V or higher. Use certified and shielded cabling. Avoid long unpowered runs.
- Avoid multiport dongles as the only path for the camera where possible.
- If other measures fail, disable USB selective suspend on the used port.
Checklist for IT and biomed
- Record hub model and power rating.
- Confirm the hub power brick is connected and the power LED is on.
- Use short, known-good cables.
- After Windows updates or docking changes, re-enumerate the camera: unplug, count to five, reconnect, then open PathCam.
